Comandante del ejército francés. Ingresó al ejército en 1893 y ascendió a comandante de división en la primera guerra mundial y a jefe del estado mayor del ejército en 1931. Apoyó la estrategia defensiva basada en la línea
Maginot y, como comandante de las fuerzas aliadas cuando estalló la segunda guerra mundial, no realizó ninguna acción ofensiva durante la llamada guerra ilusoria. Sorprendido por el asalto alemán en las Ardenas (mayo 1940), fue destituido y reemplazado por Maxime Weygand, pero Francia se desplomó al mes siguiente. Fue enjuiciado por el gobierno de Vichy y encarcelado en Alemania entre 1943 y 1945.
